influence on individuals, communities and societies. To be a ‘detailed explanation’ the ‘influence’ of the way must be included. • Muslims believe that there are recording angels with them at all times, this will make them avoid evil deeds eg lying, stealing and swearing / ‘When the two receivers receive, seated on the right and on the left, man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared.’ • Muslims will become more conscious of God and do good deeds, eg praying Salah, helping the poor and being kind to others. • It will make them accept things that happen to them as they know that Allah has instructed angels to carry out certain jobs eg the weather and taking someone’s soul. • Muslims will ask for forgiveness for the wrong that they do as they believe that the angel of death will take their soul. If they have been good then this will be done in a gentle and pain free way. • Two angels (honourable scribes) are watching and writing down the deeds of all humans, this will make Muslims more God-conscious. • Muslims will abide by the laws mentioned in the Qur’an and try to fulfil their duty to Allah as all good and bad deeds are recorded, etc.

Arguments in support

• As there is to be no other prophet, then the imamate is the most important authority as it ensures that the door of guidance is not closed. ‘You are the seal of Prophets.’ (33:40) suggests that guidance is in the hands of the imamate. • It is part of the five roots of Usul ad-Din and this shows its importance / authority for Shi’a • It ensures that Muslims have an authority to turn to in order to perfect their faith. • Without the imamate the religion would become corrupt and so an authority is needed to ensure • The Prophet appointed a successor and this shows its importance for Muslims. “I am leaving behind two weighty things, Qur’an and my family (Ahle-Bayt). If you cling to them you would never go astray”. (Sahih Muslim), etc.

Arguments in support of other views

• The Qur’an is the ultimate authority in a Muslim’s life as it is the direct word of Allah. • Allah is God so there can be no more important authority • The Qur’an has been protected by Allah and remains authentic ‘Verily we have revealed the Qur’an, and we are its protector.’ (15:9). • Muhammad is the last prophet so is of greater authority than the imamate who followed him. • Other authorities exist which help to guide people / parents help to nurture and guide their children / youth workers, counsellors, friends are all other forms of guidance that are needed / they understand individuals better and are able to guide them personally. • The mosque plays an important role in the life of a Muslim, here Muslims can get advice about daily life. This shows that it may have more authority as it is more relevant to daily life. • The Shari’ah also consists of hadith and scholarly opinion which is deemed as an authority, etc. [Plus SPaG 3 marks]
