Q1.3: Explain two ways in which belief in the Ascension of Jesus influences

Christians today.

Answer:

influence on individuals, communities and societies To be a ‘detailed explanation’ the ‘influence’ of the way must be included. • Ascension shows Jesus is with God / influences Christians to believe that Jesus is God / the way • It is the culmination of Jesus’ mission and gives final confirmation of Jesus’ divinity / Christians can follow his life and teachings in confidence. • Means that Christ has restored everything to the condition that God wishes, his mission is completed / influences Christians to look after the world for example. • Ascension links to waiting for the Second Coming / life after death / judgement / so they live as God requires them to. • Paves the way for the coming of the Holy Spirit / influences Christians to go to the Holy Spirit for guidance and comfort. • Jesus is seen as the perfection of all God wants / the promise of what awaits believers in heaven so Christians are influenced to follow him etc. Practical actions that the ascension may influence believers to do are for example pray, worship, give to charity, do good works in Christ’s name etc.

Q1.4: Explain two Christian beliefs about original sin.

Refer to sacred writings or another source of Christian belief and teaching in your answer.

Answer:

beliefs, practices and sources of authority Relevant and accurate reference to sacred writing or another source of Christian belief and teaching – 1 mark • Humans are born with an inbuilt tendency to sin / disobey God. • This tendency to sin is shown in the story of Adam and Eve who committed the first sin by breaking an instruction from God / giving in to temptation. • Adam and Eve became aware of the existence of sin through their own action of sinning. • Being descended from Adam and Eve, all humans share a tendency to sin. • Caused separation from God and caused death. • Shows power of temptation that can be interpreted as the act of Satan. • All humans are given freewill to make choices but need to be guided by God through teachings such as the Ten Commandments, Beatitudes or other teachings of Jesus and the Church in order to resist temptation to sin and to live as God requires. • Belief that baptism removes original sin. It is likely that the reference to sacred writings or Christian belief will come from the Genesis story of Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:4 – 3:24).

Arguments in support

• It is a fundamental Christian belief that should not be ignored / the Bible, believed by some to be completely literally accurate, makes it very clear that it is true. • If God did not create the earth, it would remove the need for stewardship – an idea which inspires people to do good. • God’s creation can be seen alongside scientific theories to give a more complete picture . • Does not mean people should take a literal interpretation of the Genesis story / this can be taken to contain spiritual truths. • God created an earth that is good and ordered rather than chaotic and he sustains it as his own • Humans reflect God’s capacity for creativity and relationship as they are created in the image of God and given authority over the rest of creation. • Helps to explain why humans are on a higher level than any other living creature.

Arguments in support of other views

• The creation stories are myths that were written as an explanation to suit primitive, non -scientific • Science has all the answers in eg the Big Bang theory and evolution so Christians should not have to believe in something that is wrong. • If God created the earth, who created God? • How the earth started is irrelevant / it is more important to believe in a loving and caring God because that inspires humans to do good in the world. • God’s creation cannot be proved and there is little evidence to support it. • How people live on the earth is more important than how it started.
